Leap in Karnataka's food grain allowance

Bengaluru: After execution of National Food Security Act from January 2014, Karnataka’s food grain share has seen a major increment.

According to the information gave by the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, assignment of food grain (both rice and wheat) to Karnataka was 24.56 lakh ton in 2013-14, while it was gone up to Rs 26.08 lakh ton in 2016-17.

In 2017-18, the Union government had just assigned 23.92 lakh ton to state as on January 18, 2018. In the current monetary, the Centre additionally distributed just rice according to the state’s demand.

Since Karnataka is 100% a rice-devouring state, the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs likewise enabled the state government to acquire rice locally and circulate it to the poor through people in public distribution scheme. The Centre will give the fund to the state, said an authority from the Ministry.

On Karnataka’s request to concede authorization to buy ragi and other cereals locally and circulate it through the general public distribution scheme, the Ministry is considering the issue and is relied upon to take a choice whenever.

Aside from this, the state is likewise entitled for allotment of an extra 65,713 ton of food grain under the Welfare Institutions and Hostels scheme under which food grain will be provided to old age homes, destitute centres and minorities.
