Mangaluru: Week-long lockdown comes into force in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: The week-long lockdown in Dakshina Kannada to contain the coronavirus spike in the district came into force on Wednesday, July 15 night. Deserted roads and sparse public movement were witnessed on Thursday, July 16 in the city.

A week-long lockdown has been enforced by the District administration in view of rising coronavirus cases. Public spaces that were bustling with activities since the Unlock-1 phase once again fell silent while vehicles, including buses and taxis, were off the roads.

All public transport, including private and government buses, has been banned from operations, However auto-rickshaws and cabs will be allowed to ply on roads in case of emergency. The police have placed barricades in major spots of the ty including Jyothi, state Bank, Hampankatte, Urwa store, etc..

The police force has deployed across the district and strict action will be taken against those violating lockdown norms.

Opening of theatres, malls, bars, gyms, swimming pools is not permitted. The inter-state and intra-state movement of passenger vehicles is allowed only in cases of emergencies or for permitted activities. Those traveling to other states will be permitted to go on showing their railway or Air tickets.

Health officers, teachers, police, fire personnel, and media persons are allowed to their activities. Shops selling groceries, ration, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, and fish are permitted to open from 8 am to 11 am.

Mangaluru City Corporation will be open. However, most government offices will be closed while those providing essential services and engaged in COVID works will work with 50 percent strength. Banks and ATMs will be functioning through out the lockdown.

As of Tuesday, the tally of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka stood at 44,077, including 25,839 active cases and 842 deaths. With 377 deaths, most of the fatalities have occurred in Bengaluru which also accounted for 20,969 positive cases with 15,599 active cases, according to the health department.
