It’s wedding season in India, and large, enormous, pretentious weddings can be seen in almost every town and city. Weddings, as we all know, are incomplete without music and dancing. While the bright and loud music keeps wedding guests entertained, it can be annoying to others. A poultry farmer reported that 63 of his chickens perished as a result of loud music performed during a wedding in one strange event that exemplifies the negative impacts of noise pollution.

The incident occurred in Odisha’s Balasore district, when the owner of a poultry farm, said that the music from a wedding party that visited his hamlet triggered heart attacks in more than 60 broiler birds on his farm.

Ranjit told HT, “At about 11 pm on Sunday, the bridegroom party from the nearby village of Maitapur arrived at my village with the DJ music playing loudly. The bridegroom party also blasted high-intensity firecrackers. As the sound was too much to bear for the 2000 broiler chickens on my farm.”

His pleas to stop the loud music also fell on deaf ears. “I requested people in the marriage procession to lower the volume. However, they all seemed to be drunk and verbally abused me. The terrified chickens in my farm started running around in fear and an hour later I found 63 chickens dead,” he added.

The poultry farm owner tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the hens after they collapsed. He then went to a local veterinarian, who determined that the loud noise had shocked the birds, causing them to die.
