a joint press release from the groups stated “Cattle are being transported in the cruelest manner and cattle are killed freely in illegal slaughterhouses. Cattle thieves entering houses and stealing cows has increased manifold. As the district administration has failed to prevent them, farmers and people indulging in animal husbandry are anxious. There is an atmosphere of fear in the districts,” they claimed.
“There is a Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in the district of which the deputy commissioner is the president. Illegal cattle transport and cattle slaughters are in progress in the district as the society has completely failed. The DC should make it function for protection of cattle so that the guidelines are implemented.”
“Illegal slaughterhouses are the cause of severe increase in illegal cattle traffic. There is a legal slaughterhouse in Kudroli and as per RTI act, between ten to twelve cattle are slaughtered there per day. But there are more than one thousand beef stalls in the district. That much meat is supplied to them by illegal slaughterhouses. There are illegal slaughterhouses in Kudroli Yasinmandi, Surathkal Jokatte, Kannur, Chombugudde in Ullal, Mukkacheri, Kelagina Pete, Bajpe, Suralpadi, Moodbidri, Belthangady, Uppinangady and several places in Puttur. The DC should get those identified and closed,” stated the press release.
