Mangaluru: Following a news report that only 132 shopkeepers were carrying on trade at the Central Market and the subsequent confusion among shopkeepers, the Central Market Merchants’ Association convened a press meet to clarify that a total of 492 shopkeepers are transacting their business in the to-be-demolished central market.

Speaking to press persons Central Merchants’ Association President M Ahmed Bava clarified that contrary to the news report the central market houses  132 shops of vegetables, grocery and fruits, 342 retail and wholesale shops and 18 flower shops. He urged the administration to make alternative arrangements for all the vendors before demolishing the central market.

Earlier in August District in-charge minister U T Khader and Deputy Commissioner (DC) had assured of providing an alternative space for all the vendors until the construction of the new central market which is being developed on the PPP model under Smart City project. However the assurance is yet not met, he informed.

General secretary Janardhana Salian, vice-president Gracy Fernandes and others were present.
