Scientists create biodegradable flip-flops from algae

Researchers from UC San Diego and US-based startup Algenesis Materials have created biodegradable flip-flops

According to Phys.org, Scientists at the University of California San Diego have spent years working to resolve this problem, and now they have taken a step farther toward accomplishing this mission

They formulated polyurethane foams, made from algae oil, to meet commercial specifications for flip-flops and other footwear typically made from flexible plastic.

They immersed the customized foams in traditional compost and soil and found that the materials degraded after just 16 weeks. The results of their work are published in Bioresource Technology Reports
