District in-charge minister U T Khader had launched 9 smart city works of which the foundation stone was also laid for the creation of Smart Road from A B Shetty Circle to Clock Tower. The work will be completed at the cost of Rs. 7.56 crore.
The interlocks on the Nehru Maidan side of the road have already been removed and work on the Smart Road has begun here. The smart road is designed to be people friendly and will have flowers on its side as decoration. Specially, both sides of the road will have well equipped footpaths. Until now, vehicles were allowed to be parked on the roadside on the Nehru Maidan side of the road. But henceforth, vehicles will be permitted to be parked at only specific places.
Since there is concrete road on both sides, it will not undergo any work. Instead the aim is to provide footpath, people friendly facilities and smart bus shelters. When the Smart Road work is near completion, the bus shelters on the RTO side of the road will all be replaced with Smart Bus Shelters. A few of these bus shelters will also have washroom facilities.

Since the road between A B Shetty circle and Clock Tower has already been widened, it will not be further widened. Attractive gardening will be done in the place of the divider in the middle of the road. The city will be freed from the nuisance of erratically hanging cables. Accordingly, the cables at A B Shetty circle will be taken from beneath the footpath. All wires will be underground. For the effective functioning and to prevent any change in functioning, a ‘Central Command Centre’ will start functioning.
The Smart Road will have radio frequency identification, dustbins, automatic waste management vehicle, E-toilet, traffic system with CC cameras, bus tracking system, WiFi centre, information board and walkway. Both sides of the road will have green cover, LED, smart bus shelters, kiosk centres, bus, plane, train time information will also be available in a HiFi method say the officials of the smart city plan.
Decorative lights
Smart road between A B Shetty circle and Clocl Tower will also have decorative lights. Both the sides will be joined by decorative lights in an attractive manner. Also, since there are tres on the Nehru Maidan side of the road, attractive seats will be provided for the people to sit. There is opportunity to take rest here during dawn or dusk.
Soon, the clock tower will get its watch
The work on Clock Tower has already begun under the Smart City plan and is expected to reach completion soon. In a few days the clock will be fixed to the tower.
Special importance to footpaths
Smart Road work has already been initiated under the smart city plan. It has been decided to create a fully functional footpath here. The smart road is being created make a model in Mangaluru with the aim to provide light to the smart city, said Mohammed Nazeer, Managing Director, Smart City Mangaluru.
