Successful drives conducted: Nimbargi

Udupi: The Police Department is successfully conducting drives on various violations and a week-long drive will be held against the illegal boards on the vehicles excluding authorised persons, and also on use of tinted glasses, and non-usage of seat belts respectively, informed Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbargi.

Speaking to the press, SP said that the last drive was on shrill horns and Matka. During the last drive, Rs 1,79,500 fine was collected. 53 cases of shrill horns of bullet Enfield bikes, 92 cases of other two wheelers and 251 cases of shrill horns of four-wheelers were registered during the drive. 165 cases for sound making vehicles and 492 cases for not wearing the uniforms were booked against drivers and other staff.

16 mechanics who are fitting shrill horns and 40 mechanics who are fitting silencers were called and warned about the consequences, he added.

Traffic Management and Road Safety Month will be observed in July month and the police personnel will visit schools and colleges to create awareness about it. Also different competitions will be held for the students in this regard, he mentioned.

Following June 15th phone-in programme, 36 Matka cases were registered and 38 persons were arrested. Seven gambling cases were registered and 39 people were arrested. Three were arrested in three illegal liquor sale cases. On e was arrested in  in one NDPT case, 107 cases are registered under COTPA, 74 for drunken driving, 923 for shrill horns, 33 cases for using mobile while riding/driving, 2,245 for riding without helmets, 75 cases for over speed and 4,056 cases for other crimes under Motor Vehicle Act, he informed.

The SP received 16 calls, which included the complaints against illegal liquor sale, unscientific parking, and violations of traffic rules among others.
