Will not allow Twitter to take as long it wants...: Delhi HC warns over appt of grievance officer

 

New Delhi: In a subtle warning to Twitter over delay in appointing a resident grievance officer Delhi High Court on Thursday stated that it will not allow the micro-blogging platform to take as long as it wants to comply with the rules.

The new IT rules require social media sites to appoint India-based officers. Twitter, which has failed to meet the deadline set for the appointment of the grievance officer has sought for further two weeks time.

“How long does your process take? If Twitter thinks it can take as long it wants in our country, I will not allow that,” Justice Rekha Palli said.

Adjourning the case hearing for Thursday, the High Court directed counsel Sajan Poovayya, appearing for Twitter to come up with a clear response.

“We aren’t giving them any protection. We have already made it clear. They have to comply with the rules,” the High Court said.

On Monday, the government told the court that Twitter could lose its legal immunity to action over third-party content for not complying with rules.
