Mangaluru: The district administration has geared up and warned officials of all departments to be on alert with the continuous heavy downpour that covered Dakshina Kannada district with 234mm rain in 24 hours on July 6th.

On Saturday, Minister for urban development and housing, U.T. Khader chaired an emergency meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office to review the situation. Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Kumar said that the district has received above average rainfall as on July 7th.
“The average normal rainfall of D.K. for the period of July 7th is 145mm, but the district has registered 1957mm of rainfall. As on July 7th, the district has received 135% rainfall in comparison to 86% registered for the same period in 2017. Since May and June, the rainfall is 236%. According to the forecast, an average 160mm/day heavy rainfall may continue in the district till July 11th,” he explained.
In the last 24 hours (ending 8 am on Saturday), Dakshina Kannada district received an average of 175.8 mm rainfall. Bantwal received highest of 202.3 mm rain followed by 198.5 mm, Puttur—188.3 mm, Belthangady—184.6 mm, and Mangaluru—105.4 mm.
A woman died when she accidentally fell into overflowing well at Ananthadi in Sudekattemar in Vittal. The well was overflowing due to heavy rains and its water had reached the courtyard of the house. The deceased had gone near the well to draw water when she accidentally fell into the well and drowned.
The deceased has been identified as Kamala (60), wife of Late. Dumanna Gowda, a resident of Sudekatte Mar.

The authorities in Belthangady, Sullia, Puttur and Moodibdri declared a holiday for schools, due to the heavy incessant rains,
River water level rises
The maximum level of water (danger mark) in Nethravati River at Uppinangady is 31.5 meters and the level as of Friday was 25.3 meters and on Saturday rose to 27 meters.
The district administration has deployed three swimmers, five Home Guards, village accountants and a revenue inspector at Uppinangady Temple beside river Nethravathi as a precautionary measure.
Rescue
With Nandini River overflowing, 18 members from five families were rescued by fire service personnel using boats, at Soorinje in Surathkal. As the water had entered their homes, the residents were sitting on the roof until the rescue team reached the spot.
Inundated roads
A temporary road constructed to connect Moolarapatna hanging bridge was inundated, with water level reaching to the knee level on the road and thus causing much trouble to the villagers.
The roads in Vittal were flooded and vehicular movement was affected. Water flowing on Vittal-Salethoor-Mangaluru road at Kudthamugeri, disrupted vehicular movement for some time. Water has entered into houses and farm land at Karai in Kolnadu, Kodangai in Vitla Padnoor. Water has also entered inside Kapumajalu Temple, masjid at Moorukaje in Vittal.
The compound wall of Government School in Gandhinagara, Central Library at Light House hill collapsed following the heavy rains in Mangaluru.
Uprooted trees and landslides on the nine-kilometre stretch from Majjoni-Kodapadavu-Karai on Vittal-B C Road-Mangaluru disrupted the movement of vehicles till noon.
Snanaghatta inundated
Following the increase in water level in river Kumaradhara, the Snanaghatta at Kukke Subrahmanya temple was inundated. The old bridge across Kumaradhara connecting Kukke Subrahamanya has submerged. Darpanatheertha River, the tributary of Kumaradhara, is also overflowing in the region and water from the river has entered agricultural land in and around Subrahmanya.
10 persons have lost their lives and 929 houses have been damaged in the recent rain related calamities. Rs. 5 lakh compensation has been distributed to the kin of 6 victims and the process is on to compensate the remaining families, informed ADC Kumar.
On Sunday, a 30 member strong National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team will arrive in Mangaluru. Fire and emergency department, police, home guards and all other departments are well prepared to act swiftly. Rescue boats, wood cutters and other equipment were being sent to areas on requirement, he added.
