Mangaluru/Udupi/Kasaragod: Even before the arrival of the monsoon, intermittent rain received since Thursday morning in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts created a feeling of fear in low lying areas. There was good rain accompanied with thunder and lightning. The waves turned extra powerful along the coast. Two people lost their lives in connection to mishaps due to the rain.

An elderly lady died and a woman died due to electrocution in separate incidents at Uppunda in Udupi district and Belthangady district respectively.
Artificial floods
The collapse of mud from the upper area beside the railway underpass at Padil on Thursday morning affected the traffic movement here until the afternoon.
In the backdrop of the blocking of the drain in front of Omega hospital at Pumpwell, rain water managed to enter the lower floors of housing complex here. The rain between Wednesday night and Thursday morning has ripped off the mud beside the service road on one side of Gorigudda.

The area in front of Mangaluru central railway station experienced artificial flooding. Vehicular movement was affected after many roads were inundated by rain water including the area in front of Jyothi, Bunts Hostel, City Centre and at Kankanady Fr. Muller’s Hospital, jail road and other areas.
Traffic density
The rain on Thursday brought forth traffic density at some places in the city. Mangaluru city Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil visited the locations and took action.
The road works along Udupi-Manipal road were adversely affected by the rain. Many electricity poles have been uprooted, transformers damaged and low lying areas have been inundated.
Heavy rain was reported from Belthangady, Dharmasthala, Puttur, Uppinangady, Shiradi, Bajatturu, Subrahmanya, Sullia, Jalsuru, Kasaragod, Knyana, Vittal, Surathkal, Bantwal, Ullal and Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada and from Kaup, Udupi, Manipal, Padubidri, Karkala, Hebri, Siddapura, Tekkatte, Belman, Kollur, Vandse, Koteshwar, Kundapur, Kota, Brahmavar, Shirva and other areas in Udupi district.
Sea erosion
A separate team under the leadership of Mangaluru tahsildar has been created to manage the danger of sea erosion at Ullal, Someshwar, Ucchila and Kaiko areas. Additional Deputy Commissioner and Tahsildar visited and inspected Malpe and Padukere areas in Udupi.
Adikka Masjid, 2 houses lost to the seaKumble: A masjid and two houses collapsed due to sea erosion at Masodi Adikka near Uppala, while 13 more houses are facing existential danger. The local Balappu masjid and the houses belonging to Mohammed and his daughter have collapsed. 6 houses have been relocated. Kasaragod MP KP Unnithan had visited the location and assured of taking action to provide compensation.
An acacia tree, which was uprooted on Wednesday night at Panjatotti in Uppala brought down the power cables with its fall. Uppala fire brigade personnel and Electricity Department officials cut off the tree and cleared it.
DC sends notice
The Deputy commissioner has send notice to concerned officials asking them to find out the reason behind the artificial flooding experienced at some areas. A boat has been set aside for used at Adyapady in case of landslide or flooding. The road fallen across Charmadi Ghat road have been removed. The slab causing the water to remain stagnant at Kodialbail and Sonar Apartments at Dongerkere in Mangaluru has been asked to be removed.
In Udupi, complaints are being received through ‘Udupi Help’ app and attempts are being made to resolve the same. In the meeting conducted on Thursday, the Deputy Commissioner asked to take precautionary measures.
NDRF, police, fire brigade personnel and 60 staffs of the home guards in DK are on the alert to manage any disaster.
Fishermen warnedKasaragod: In the next 24 hours, the wind is expected to blow at the speed of 35-45 kms/hr. Hence, the Weather Department has warned the fishermen from venturing out into the sea.
Mundkur: House damaged by lightning strikeBelman: A house belonging to Robert Fernandes , located near Mundkur panchayat was damaged due to a lightning strike on Wednesday night. At around 8pm in the night, the lightning struck the kitchen of the house and completely destroyed roof and the interiors of the house.
Fortunately, Robert along with his wife, daughter and his triplet grand children had a miraculous escape after having walked out of the kitchen, just five minutes before the lightning struck. However the fridge, TV, pump set and meter ended up completely charred.
