The police action of stopping the Bhajan and Yakshgana programmes, being staged on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri came for a lot of criticism as it hurt the religious sentiments of devotees as also other members of the audience who were enjoying the programme. A heated debate ensued between the public and the police, who claimed to be acting on a public complaint about the resulting noise pollution.

On coming to know of the incident, local MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Bharath Shetty rushed to the spot and requested the police to allow conduct of the programme. Meanwhile the police have stated that contrary to allegations made by locals, they had only requested the organisers to reduce the noise levels.
